A month or so ago, Bracken and I watched a movie on the church's website called "Pass it On," which highlighted kind things children did for each other, and made a light shine whenever the kind deed happened. A few days later we read about Moses and Pharaoh, specifically about how Pharaoh had a hard heart.
Bracken started doing all sorts of cute things to help me out. He'd say, "Mom, close your eyes!" and hurry and pick up the living room, then say, "Open them!" and want me to be super surprised. He'd push a chair over to the sink and wash all the dishes, share a toy with Chandra, or put books back on the shelf, then say, "Did I put a light on in your heart?"
He came up to me one day and said, "Feel this." and had me put my hand over his heart. "What am I feeling Bracken?" "My heart. It's warm and soft. Not hard like Pharaoh's."
It works both ways though. One day I took one of the strawberries off his plate that he hadn't touched and cut it up and gave it to Chandra without asking. Tears welled up in his eyes, and his voice trembled as he said, "Mom, why did you take my strawberry? You just took all the lights out of my heart." I about started crying too and scooped him up in my arms and made amends.
I'm so grateful for such a kind little son who puts lights on in my heart everyday.
